Today Mr. Bell helped me plant green onions and lemon cucumbers, so now all my veggie beds are full (the others have mesclun mix and bok choy, along with some experimental basil). I am getting excited! We also planted some sweet peas to cover the fence, because the fence is not terribly attractive, and I would like to add some marigolds to control insect pests. The chickens watched with great interest.
This is not really the climate for basil, but should I try growing it anyway, just for fun?
I spent about two hours in the vegetable garden today. The landlords helped me put up a fence and I worked the beds and then planted mesclun mix and bok choy. I have half a bed left for…something and I need to get some containers for carrots, as we have gophers galore. It is looking very official and gardeny, all watered in, and I am excited. As I type, Ziggy the next door cat is scoping the gopher situation, to which she is more than welcome. I have promised a bounty of one catnip mouse per 10 gophers.
I was worried that the spoons might have rotted underground with all the wet, but they straggled to the surface! Apparently forks are kind of a chronic problem around the property; I’ll try to weed them out, but I suspect they’ll be back.
